In addition to the base's fortified positions and arsenal, Hoth's extreme cold provided the rebels with an extra layer of defense. Darth Vader himself led an Imperial contingent, comprised of specialized troops equipped for combat in arctic environments, to launch a decisive attack and annihilate Echo Base.
